Five ways AI projects die at the implementation level
I've talked to enough companies running AI projects (and enough who've abandoned them) to see patterns. Here's what actually goes wrong.
1. The problem was never clearly defined
The most common failure mode. RAND flagged it as their number-one finding: industry stakeholders miscommunicate what problem needs to be solved, and the technical team builds the wrong thing.
A CEO says "we need AI for customer service." That's not a problem definition. That's a technology request. A problem definition sounds like: "We lose 40% of after-hours leads because nobody answers the phone, and those leads are worth $180 each." That's something you can build a solution for.

2. The infrastructure wasn't ready

Nobody can state the success metric in one sentence. Ask five people on the project team what success looks like. If you get five different answers or five vague ones, the project doesn't have a clear objective.
